Nits, brightness, and why some screens light better

A little display literacy tells you which screen in your house is the best light.

Not all screens make equally good lights, and the difference comes down to one specification most people never look at: peak brightness, measured in nits.

What a nit actually is

A nit is a measure of luminance — how much light a surface emits per unit of area. Higher nits means a brighter screen. As rough reference points, older budget monitors often peak around 200 to 250 nits, typical modern laptops and monitors land in the 300 to 400 range, good tablets and premium laptops reach 500 or more, and modern flagship phones can spike past 1,000 nits in bright conditions, though rarely while displaying a full-white screen for a long period.

Why brightness matters more than size for a light

Screen size determines how soft your light is; brightness determines how much of it reaches your face. A large dim monitor produces beautiful soft light that may still leave you underexposed on a webcam; a small bright tablet delivers plenty of light but with harder shadows. The ideal is a large, bright display — which is why a decent 24 to 27 inch monitor at full brightness is the best screen light most people already own, and why a phone works better as an accent or fill than as a main key.

Distance changes everything

Light falls off sharply with distance — moving a source twice as far away leaves you with roughly a quarter of the light. This is why a modest screen 18 inches from your face outperforms a much brighter one across the room, and why the practical fix for "not bright enough" is almost always to move the screen closer rather than to buy a brighter one.

Getting the most from what you have

Turn the display's own hardware brightness to maximum — a software light can only work with the photons the panel emits. Disable any automatic brightness or ambient light sensor, or the screen will dim itself the moment it decides the room is dark. Turn off blue light or night shift modes while using a screen as a light, since they shift color temperature unpredictably and undo careful white balance. And if your display supports HDR, note that peak HDR brightness generally applies to small highlights rather than a full white field, so the practical output is closer to the standard rating.

The honest limitation

A screen will never match a dedicated 100-watt LED panel for raw output, and in a brightly sunlit room it may not be able to compete with the window at all. Where it excels is the situation most people are actually in: an ordinary indoor room, a mediocre webcam, and a face that needs another stop or two of soft light from the front. In that setting — which is nearly every video call ever taken — a screen is genuinely enough.
